House dust mites have been recognised as a major source of allergen. The concentration of the main allergen protein, Der p1, can outlast the mite itself, because it is found in high concentrations in mite faeces.
 
Vacuuming alone will reduce the number of dust mites, but will not solve the allergy problem as the protien is often left behind, stuck to the surface. However,  because of the high temperatures involved, vacuuming with steam will remove the allergens as well as killing and removing the mites.
